No. 6 Hawaii loses to No. 25 Cal in volleyball
Emily Hartong had a match-high 18 kills and Jane Croson had 17 but it wasn’t enough as No. 6 Hawaii saw its undefeated season ended tonight by No. 25 California.
The Golden Bears (2-3, 1-2) won their first match of the Hawaiian Airlines Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center, rallying to upset the host Rainbow Wahine 25-23, 16-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-12.
Hawaii (5-1, 2-1) won its 10th HAL title based on set-differential with Baylor. The Rainbow Wahine and Bears both finished 2-1 in the event.
It was the second time in four years that Cal handed Hawaii its first loss of the year. It also occurred in 2009 in this event.
Hartong was named the Most Outstanding Player for the second consecutive tournament. Joining her on the all-tournament team were teammates Croson, Jade Vorster and Mita Uiato.
Christina Higgins and Adrienne Gehan led the Golden Bears with 10 kills each.
