Miss Hawaii 2003 Kanoe Gibson is the latest bearer of the scholarship pageant crown to get a job in television news.
Gibson started at KHON-TV on Monday as weekend weather anchorwoman and weekday reporter, joining Olena Rubin Heu, Miss Hawaii 2004, on the news staff. Trini Kaopuiki, weather anchorwoman for “Wake Up 2day,” was crowned Miss Hawaii USA in 1999.
At Hawaii News Now, former weather anchorwoman Malika Dudley was Miss Hawaii 2005.
Gibson served the KHON news department as an intern after graduating from the University of Hawaii with degrees in marketing and business management. She has appeared in numerous TV commercials; co-hosted “Connecting Point,” a TV segment with New Hope pastor Wayne Cordeiro; and looped back to KHON to host the station’s holiday special representing Pearlridge Center, as well as the “Trend Watch” segment on “Wake Up 2day.”
“We are excited to have Kanoe join the team. It feels like she has been a part of KHON2 for so long, so it’ll be a great fit for all of us,” news director Lori Silva said in a statement.
Slippers prove popular
A column posted at 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 10 about lounging slippers designed for Hilton Hotels & Resorts by internationally renowned fashion designer Vivienne Tam netted an email seven hours later reporting that the women’s sizes were sold out.
While designed for Hilton’s Huanying hospitality program for visitors from China, the Water Dragon slippers also were available to anyone online for $28 plus shipping and have been “extremely popular,” said John Forrest Ales, Hilton senior director for global brand public relations.
“We’ve replenished the inventory on (the) Hilton to Home (ecommerce website) a few times, and the slippers are currently in stock,” he said. It was music to the eyes, and potentially the toes, of the reader.
The slippers can be purchased at www.hiltontohome.com, and shoppers can save 20 percent on those and other purchases (with some restrictions) through Sept. 30 by entering the code VTHILTON.
The Huanying program takes its name from the Chinese word for “welcome” and is available at 70 Hilton properties in 23 countries, including Hawaii’s Hilton Hawaiian Village, Hilton Waikiki Beach and Hilton Waikoloa Village.
Ship & Save update
A recent column about a new service that saves Hawaii and Alaska shoppers money on shipping of online and other purchases needs updating. In addition to ShopThe48.com, AlohaForwarding.com, ShipToHawaii.com and ShipToAlaska.com, the somewhat venerable Ship & Save Service is still up and running, but its owner has been having technical difficulties.
“I have had a lot of trouble with my Web host,” said Carol Simpson. “My site was down for over a month, and I have had no business since then.”
Because the site remains inoperable, customers who wish to use the service need to contact her directly by phone at 314-368-4441 or via email at simpsoncarol@rockwood.k12.mo.us.
