Hawaii island man faces firearms-related charges

A 49-year-old Volcano man who alerted police to what he claimed was an explosive device in his possession now faces multiple firearms-related charges.

Big Island police charged Keith Kapena Hulihee with four counts related to being a convicted felon in possession of ammunition, one count of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. Hulihee’s bail was set at $120,000.

Police went to Hulihee’s home in Mauna Loa Estates on Saturday after receiving reports of shots being fired in the area. Hulihee allegedly told police that he had an explosive device that he wanted to turn over. The area was evacuated while police recovered the item, which was later identified as a military gas canister that did not pose any danger.

Detectives did not find any explosive devices on the property but did recover ammunition and drugs, leading to Hulihee’s arrest.
