Reservations are being taken for a limited run of walking tours that bring to life the four days leading up to the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii.
The free "Mai Poina (Don’t Forget): The Overthrow" tours will be held on the grounds of Iolani Palace at 5, 5:20, 5:40, and 6 p.m. Sept. 2 and Sept. 7-9.
First presented in 2009, the event features costumed role-players who describe the significant events and sites surrounding the 1893 overthrow.
After the tours, attendees will hear slam poetry by Youth Speaks Hawai‘i teens and can join in a discussion led by Native Hawaiian scholars.
"This is a wonderful way to educate visitors and residents about Hawaii’s history," Craig Howes, director of the tour’s co-sponsor, the University of Hawaii Center for Biographical Research, said in a news release."Our center was founded to facilitate and encourage the study and practice of biography in all its forms, and we hope to see more people learning history in this engaging way."
A reader’s guide with historical information and analysis of the overthrow will be distributed to tourgoers.
The Sept. 2 performance will conclude the ‘Onipa‘a Celebration, commemorating the life of Queen Liliuokalani with song, chant, theater and presentations by Hawaiian groups.
