An annual peace bell ringing ceremony in Honolulu will mark the 67th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima this week.

On Aug. 6, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Three days later, the U.S. dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki, leading to Japan’s surrender and the end of World War II.

Monday’s ceremony at Izumo Taishakyo Mission will include an announcement about a new Hiroshima exhibit at Pearl Harbor. Pacific Historic Parks is expected to announce details of a donation by the family of Sadako Sasaki, who was 2 years old when the bomb dropped and died at 12 years old of leukemia.  

In 1985, the Hiroshima Prefectural Government gave Hawaii a replica of the Hiroshima Peace Bell.
