Police: Large Hawaii island brush fire part of an arson spree

Hawaii County police are investigating a rash of suspicious fires — the largest scorching 4,500 acres — in the Kau district have occurred over the last six weeks.

Police said that since June 14, officers have started six fire investigations, including three in a single day.

On June 14, a 200-square-foot fire was found to be suspicious.

On June 18, three brush fires were reported, one was 200 square feet, the other two were 4,500 acres and 1,500 acres.

A 10-acre fire was reported on July 13 and a 200-acre fire was reported.

Police ask the public to be diligent about reporting any suspicious  activity, especially in the area of any fires or dry brush. Anyone with information about the fires is asked to call police at 935-3311.
