A new Hawaii law is aimed at preventing the spread of axis deer.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie on Thursday signed a bill prohibiting intentional possession, interisland transportation and release of wild or feral deer.

The axis deer has caused significant damage to native habitats and agricultural crops on Maui. The animals recently started appearing on Hawaii island but it’s not clear how they got there.

Sen. Gilbert Kahele who introduced the measure says it’s important for Hawaii to protect its environment from non-native species.

The Humane Society of United States and the Humane Society Wildlife Trust supported the bill. The organizations are offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone illegally transporting, releasing or abandoning deer on Hawaii island.
