Police arrested an 18-year-old Honolulu man in connection with an attempted kidnapping of a woman at Ala Moana Center.

A woman, 29, reported that a man followed her while she was walking to her vehicle about 7:30 a.m. Monday, police said. After a brief verbal confrontation, the victim continued on to her vehicle but the man grabbed her from behind and attempted to strangle her, police said.

The victim fought off the suspect, who fled the scene, police said. A patrol officer stopped the suspect for jaywalking on Keeaumoku Street a short time later. The officer arrested him after learning during a check that the man was suspected of an attempted kidnapping, police said.
