2 dead in collision of pickup truck and sedan on Hawaii island
Two men died and two others were injured in a collision between a full-size pickup truck and a compact sedan near the intersection of Kawaihae Road and Queen Kaahumanu Highway.
Hawaii County firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene at about 12:16 a.m. Sunday and found two men, in their late teens or early 20s, had been ejected from the sedan. One man died at the scene. The other man died at the hospital, firefighters said.
The driver of the pick-up truck, a man in his 40s, and the driver of the sedan, also in his late teens or early 20s, were taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital. No information was released on their conditions.
Firefighters said there were indications that speed and alcohol may have been factors in the accident.
Police closed Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kawaihae Road around the accident scene for about 4 hours while the scene was cleared and investigators looked into the cause of the crash.
