Rainbows drop final game of series
Michael Gerlach went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Nick Schultz homered to help San Jose State avoid a sweep with a 6-4 victory against Hawaii in the final game of the series on Sunday at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif.
Freshman Scott Squier (3-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in four innings for the Rainbows (23-16, 4-2 Western Athletic Conference).
Zack Jones (3-2) earned the win for the Spartans (19-16, 4-2), who are tied with Hawaii for second in the WAC behind New Mexico State.
Stephen Ventimilia, Kaeo Aliviado and Zack Swasey had two hits apiece and Trevor Podratz homered for Hawaii, which put the tying run on base in the ninth inning before Collin Bennett grounded into a game-ending double play.
Hawaii will play a nonconference game at Grambling on Tuesday before a three-game series at Louisiana Tech starting Thursday.
