An attack in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province killed a Schofield Barracks soldier Thursday, the Department of Defense said Saturday.

Second Lt. Clovis Tim Ray, 34, of San Antonio died of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit on foot patrol with an improvised explosive device.

Ray was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

He joined the Army April 20, 2010, and is survived by his wife and 5-year-old son.

The 3rd Brigade Combat Team of about 3,500 Schofield soldiers is winding up a yearlong deployment in eastern Afghanistan. Ray is the 18th 3rd Brigade soldier killed on the deployment that started last March and April.

Ray’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (posthumous), Purple Heart (posthumous), two Army Commendation Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal (posthumous), Combat Infantry Badge and Parachutist Badge.

His death comes as Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai has called for U.S. forces to leave rural areas like eastern Afghanistan immediately and let Afghans take the lead in security next year.

Karzai made the demand after the slaughter of nine Afghan children and seven adults allegedly by U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales in Kandahar Province, and the inadvertent burnings of Qurans by U.S. soldiers.
