Baby boy died in a homicide, medical examiners say
The Honolulu medical examiner’s office has identified the 14-month-old Ewa Beach boy who died Monday from abusive blows to the head as Zayden Lonergan, and classified the death as a homicide.
Medical examiners said following an autopsy that the cause of death was "complications of cranial cerebral injuries due to abusive head trauma" and that manner of death was homicide.
Honolulu Police Department detectives, who originally classified the case as an unattended death pending Tuesday’s autopsy, said the boy was moved from an Ewa Beach care facility to Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children on Thursday, and died about 5:05 a.m. Monday.
Police did not say when or exactly where the alleged abuse happened.
The case has been turned over to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service because the incident happened on military property and the father is a Marine. NCIS personnel could not be reached Tuesday night.
