The state Department of Education has received a $40,300 grant from Kaiser Permanente Hawaii to improve the health of schoolchildren.
The grant was among more than $128,000 in grants that Kaiser awarded this month to community health and nutrition programs.
The specific goal of the grant to the DOE is to improve its wellness guidelines scores by establishing a nutrition program at the state and school levels.
A $30,000 grant to the city is aimed at getting more people to buy fresh and locally grown produce at the People’s Open Market, the largest farmers market network in Hawaii with 25 locations.
Other grants went to the Head Star Association of Hawaii, the Hawaii Foodbank and the Kohala Center and the Food Basket on Hawaii island.
