State Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustees are asking Gov. Neil Abercrombie to select a replacement for former trustee Boyd Mossman, who resigned effective Nov. 1.
At a meeting on Maui Monday, seven trustees voted unanimously to declare an impasse in selecting Mossman’s replacement and adopted a resolution asking Abercrombie to make the choice.
"I’m very disappointed," trustee Colette Machado said.
Mossman has taken a position as president of the Kona Hawaii Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The trustees voted 14 times but were unable to garner the six votes needed to select his replacement.
Trustee Peter Apo said securing six votes was almost a "mission impossible" with only seven of the board’s nine members attending. Trustee Donald Cataluna was absent.
Maui resident Kaniela Ing received five votes, the most of any nominee.
Ing, a former University of Hawaii student body president, said he plans to run for the state House 11th District (Kihei-Wailea-Makena) seat occupied by Republican George Fontaine and would not seek a trustee seat in next year’s election.
Apo said he thought Ing received the most support because he wasn’t planning to use the appointment to create an incumbency.
Trustee Haunani Apoliona, who did not vote for Ing, said she supported the appointment of Maui resident Rose Duey, who had more experience and letters of support.
