Lava enters ocean at Laeapuki
Scientists at the Hawaiian Volcanos Observatory say satellite images and reports suggest lavea has reached the coast and is probably entering the ocean as a trickle, but the volumne is not yet enough to generate a steam plume visiblefrom the county’s Kalapana viewing area.
The daily volcano update from the observatory says lava continues to flow into the tube system connecting Puu Oo cone and the abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision and coastal plain.
The observatory reported that a glow from lava is visible in the east and south parts of Puu Oo.
The Volcano Discovery website posted dramatic video of lava entering the ocean Friday evening at Laeapuki, less than five miles from the end of Chain of Craters Road and about three and a half miles from Kalapana Gardens. The video is available on YouTube under the heading “KalapanaLavaEntry.”
