Hawaii spent $3.2M on APEC safety expenses
The state of Hawaii spent less than half of what was projected for safety expenses during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
The state said today it spent about $3.2 million. The cost to activate hundreds of Hawaii National Guard members to full-time status was about $2.5 million while costs for state Civil Defense were about $84,000. Other state departments incurred costs totaling less than $600,000.
Some of the eight other state departments that incurred costs include the Department of Health, which regularly took air samples of meeting places to ensure they were safe enough for large groups to gather, and the Department of Transportation, which handled dignitaries at the airport and managed road closures.
