Trade winds are expected to bring windward showers in the morning and scattered showers in the afternoon that could reach leeward areas through the weekend.

National Weather Service forecasters say cloudy skies and scattered showers are expected through next week.

Forecasters are watching a weather system west of Kauai, which is bringing moist air over the islands. The system is expected to move away and weaken. However, if it shifts direction it could bring the chance of thunderstorms to the islands.

Ian Morrison, a forecaster with the National Weather Service, says while skies cleared after morning showers over Honolulu today. The cloudy skies are likely to return by afternoon.

"We’re still going to  see those mid- and high-level clouds bringing cloudy skies," he said.

The clouds and cold temperatures are also brining icy fog and light snow to Big Island summits.

Morrison said trade wind weather, similar to today’s conditions, is expected through the weekend.

"It’s going to be showery on the windward side. Leeward sides could get occasional rain and showers," he said.
