Police have reopened the intersection of Ala Wai Boulevard, McCully Street and Kalakaua Avenue after they determined suspicious items were harmless.

Police closed the intersections about 2:30 p.m. after discovering an unattended blue suitcase and green sleeping bag at a bus stop across from the 7-11 store near Ena Road.

An FBI agent attached a line to the sleeping bag and separated it from the luggage. The agent, wearing body armor, opened the luggage and emptied the contents, which turned out to be harmless.

The contents included plastic shopping bags, a pair of tennis shoes and a blanket.

Law enforcement officers said they checked if the items were radiating, did X-rays and then thumbed through it to determine that it was safe.

“Being that it’s APEC week and usually homeless people don’t just leave their stuff, that’s why we have what we have now,” said HPD Sgt. Aaron Agmata.
