A sport utility vehicle rested on Kilauea Avenue. The driver, an 18-year-old woman, lost control of the vehicle and hit a guardrail early this morning, police said.

Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in a traffic accident in Kaimuki overnight that killed an 18-year-old woman and sent three other teenagers to the hospital, police said this morning.

Friends identified the woman as Tayler Pangan-Fergerstrom, who was originally from Molokai and attending college on Oahu.

The four teenagers were traveling downhill on Kilauea Avenue in a 2000 Chevy Tracker sports utility vehicle at about 12:45 a.m. when the 18-year-old Honolulu woman driving the SUV lost control, hit the right curb and slammed into the metal guardrail in front of Kaimuki Intermediate School at 19th Avenue, police said.

Paramedics took  19-year-old man from Hilo and a 19-year-old California man to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition. An 18-year-old Arizona man, who was in the front seat, went to Kuakini Medical Center in stable condition.

Police said the woman was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

It is not known if the teenagers were wearing seat belts. Rain fell in Kaimuki overnight and the roads were wet.

Police closed Kilauea Avenue between 18th and 20th avenues as officers from the Traffic Division investigated the crash. The road reopened at about 4:30 a.m.

This was the 47th traffic death this year compared to 50 fatalities on Oahu at the same time last year.
