Horizon Lines to cease Guam cargo service, Matson to step up

Matson Navigation Co. expects to fill a void opening up in container shipping to Guam next month when rival Horizon Lines Inc. ends its service there.

Horizon is terminating service to Guam, Micronesia and the Northern Mariana Islands as part of a decision to end service between the West Coast and China.

Horizon makes a weekly stop in Guam as part of the China service, which is losing money.

Matson, which also serves Guam weekly and delivered 6,700 to the Pacific island in the first half of this year, said today that it has excess cargo capacity to handle the volume left by Horizon.

Matson, a subsidiary of Honolulu-based Alexander & Baldwin Inc., said it anticipates another carrier will eventually enter the Guam market to restore competition.
