Groundbreaking on Wednesday for Hale Ka Lae, a new 10-story condominium in Hawaii Kai, followed a Hawaiian blessing, chant, musical and hula performances. The ceremony, which was led by Kaleo Paik, right, included, from left: Bruce Coppa, state Department of Accounting and General Services; Rep. Gene Ward; Kwon Ho Ha, Hale Ka Lae; Mayor Peter Carlisle; developer Michael Greco; Elizabeth Reilly, Livable Hawaii Kai Hui; Gary Kohn and Chris Pemberton of Solomon Cordwell Buenz; Wayne Goo, WCIT Architecture; Sen. Sam Slom; and Ron Parker, Hale Ka Lae. Development of the three-acre parcel at 7000 Hawaii Kai Drive will generate 350 to 400 construction jobs, Greco said. The 242 planned units will range from $700,000 to $3.8 million. Hale Ka Lae's name, which means "house at the point" in Hawaiian, was suggested by former firefighter, longtime waterman and Hawaii Kai resident John Clark.
