Kealakekua pedestrian dies after being struck Sept. 14
An 84-year-old pedestrian died Wednesday of injuries he sustained a week earlier when a van hit him in Kealakekua, Hawaii County police said.
Police identified the victim as Greg Rosario Gregorio of Kealakekua.
Kona patrol officers determined that Gregorio was crossing Hawaii Belt Road south of the 112-mile marker in Kealakekua about 6:40 p.m. on Sept. 14 when a northbound 2001 GMC van hit him.
Gregorio was not in a crosswalk, police said. The van was driven by a 24-year-old Ocean View man. He was not injured.
Fire rescue personel took Gregorio to Kona Community Hospital. He died there Wednesday at 2:24 p.m.
It was not known if speeding, alcohol or drugs are involved, police said. Traffic Enforcement Unit officers opened a negligent homicide investigation and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
