HPU students rescued after being stranded above Manoa Falls

Three Hawaii Pacific University students are safe at home after spending the night on a ledge above Manoa Falls.

The three — two men and a woman in their early 20s — called for help with a cellphone at 6:20 Monday night after they wandered off the trail, said Capt. Terry Seelig, the Honolulu Fire Department spokesman.

The trio left the trail after climbing to the top of the first waterfall and then got disoriented and ended up on ledge, Seelig said.

A fire department helicopter spotted the three at 6:45 p.m., but fire rescuers were unable to reach them because of darkness and suspended the rescue efforts until 6 this morning.

The fire department helicopter airlifted the trio off the ledge and flew them to the Lyon Aboretum parking lot at 7:15 a.m. None of the three needed medical attention.
