Two flights from Nagoya to Honolulu were cancelled this morning as Typhoon Talas hits western, central and northeastern Japan.

The Japan Airliness flight 612 and Delta Airline’s flight 84, both from Nagoya, were cancelled this morning, a state Department of Transportation spokesman said.

Also cancelled are the JAL and Delta return fights to Nagoya today.

The other 15 flights from Japan to Hawaii are still scheduled to arrive today.

Typhoon Talas had maximum sustained winds of 78 miles per hour and gusts of 110 mph, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

This season’s 12th typhoon could make landfall in western or central Japan Friday or Saturday, the agency said.

Rains up to 12 to 20 inches were forecast for some areas of eastern and western Japan in a 24-hour period through Friday evening.

The outer bands of the storm were already affecting Japan Thursday, causing heavy rains that flooded more than 140 houses in areas north of Tokyo, the public broadcaster NHK reported.

The typhoon was expected to cause rainfalls for long periods, because of its relative slow speed. Among the rain-affected will be the northeastern part of Japan devastated by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, and still covered in mud and rubble.

Typhoons in Japan frequently cause mudslides, halt trains and planes, with heavy winds injuring people struck by flying objects or slamming them to the ground.
