Police: Witnesses catch driver who tried to run from fatal crash
Honolulu police arrested a 20-year-old Waianae man on suspicion of drunk driving, failure to render aid and negligent homicide in connection with a pedestrian death in Makaha last night.
Police said a 22-year-old Waianae man was walking on the side of Farrington Highway at about 8:10 p.m. Sunday night near Lahilahi Street when a white 1998 Inifiti headed towards town veered off the road and hit him. Police said the victim was thrown into the windshield of the car, which attempted to drive away but ended up in a culvert.
The 20-year-old driver tried to run away toward the beach, but police said witnesses caught and detained him.
The victim died at the scene of massive injuries, police said.
Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.
Farrington Highway was closed in both directions between Orange Street and Jade Street while police investigated the crash. The highway reopened at about 6:30 a.m.
