Fernanda, which entered the Central Pacific Thursday as a strong tropical storm, rapidly weakened to a tropical depression by late morning today.

At 11 a.m. today, the storm was 700 miles east-southeast of South Point with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph, and was expected to dissipate in the next two days, Central Pacific Hurricane Center forecasters said. It was moving west-northwest at 12 mph.

"Fernanda is expected to continue to weaken and become a post-tropical remnant low by Saturday" with winds of just 25 to 35 mph, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center on Oahu.

The remains of the dissipated system may bring some showers and cloud cover along with higher humidity to the Big Island and Maui County on Sunday and Monday, forecasters said, but the rest of the state should see typical tradewind weather.
