Driver who killed pedestrian in Kalihi sentenced to probation
A driver who struck and fatally injured a pedestrian in Kalihi last year was sentenced in state court this morning to one year of probation for third-degree negligent homicide.
Wayne Kaya, 56, must also serve one weekend in jail, is prohibited from driving for a year and was ordered to pay $11,459 restitution to the victim’s family and $567 to the state Department of Human Services.
Kaya was driving a pickup truck on Kalihi Street July 6, 2010, when his vehicle hit Leemar Dacanay near the Eluwene Street intersection.
Police said Dacanay, 30, was in a crosswalk and that Kaya was speeding.
Dacanay was taken to Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition. He died the following day.
