West Hawaii Civic Center gets solar power

The West Hawaii Civic Center is getting solar power.

Big Island Mayor Billy Kenoi switched on a 250-kilowatt solar photovoltaic project Tuesday afternoon.

Hawaii County officials say the project will supply the 80,000-square-foot complex is to get 100 percent solar power.

The installation is expected to generate more than 400,000 kilowatt hours of solar electricity per year. That’s the equivalent of displacing 770 barrels of oil.
