Strong quake strikes off Japan; no tsunami generated

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 has struck off the east coast of Japan, the U.S. Geological Survey said tonight.

A Pacific-wide tsunami was not generated and there is no threat to Hawaii, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach.

The quake, centered 78 miles northeast of Sendai, struck at 1:34 p.m. Saturday in Japan (5:35 p.m. Friday in Hawaii), according to the USGS.

The region was devastated on March 11 by a 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami that killed more than 28,000 people, and has suffered many strong aftershocks since then.
