It has been a deadly weekend on Hawaii’s roadways, with four deaths through Sunday.
A mo-ped rider was killed and another seriously injured in a collision with a car on Kalanianaole Highway near Sea Life Park.
According to police, a Nissan sedan driven by a 29-year-old man was traveling Sunday toward Kailua when it crossed the center lane and collided head-on with a mo-ped driven by a 23-year-old man. The rider was then struck by another mo-ped, driven by a 28-year-old man, that was traveling directly behind.
The 23-year-old rider was taken in critical condition to Castle Medical Center, where he later died. The second mo-ped rider was also taken to Castle and remained in serious condition.
The driver of the car and his 2-year-old male passenger were uninjured.
Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash. It has not yet been determined whether excessive speed was a factor.
It was the 27th motor vehicle fatality on Oahu this year, compared with 30 at the same time last year.
Earlier Sunday a 21-year-old Kapolei man died in a motorcycle crash in Campbell Industrial Park, police said.
The crash happened at 12:55 a.m. on Malakole Street when the victim, driving a 2006 Yamaha motorcycle, lost control and laid the motorcycle down, sliding into concrete barriers, police said. The man was ejected from the motorcycle and suffered fatal injuries, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the victim was not wearing a helmet, and excessive speed may have been a factor in the crash.
It was the 26th fatality on Oahu roads this year.
On Maui a white 2002 Honda Accord driven by a 68-year-old man went off the road Saturday evening and crashed into a rock wall at Makawao Union Church, killing the driver and his 67-year-old passenger, Maui police said.
Police identified the victims as Arthur and Sheryl Takabayashi of Makawao.
The crash happened at about 6:32 p.m. at 1444 Baldwin Ave. Police said the Accord crossed the front lawn of the church and hit the wall. There was no indication the driver tried to stop or avoid the crash, police said.
Both victims were wearing seat belts. Arthur Takabayashi died at the scene, and Sheryl Takabayashi died at the hospital, police said.
There have been nine traffic deaths on Maui so far this year compared with eight at the same time last year.
Back on Oahu an 18-year-old woman was in critical condition after she was hit by a car Saturday night while crossing the street near Coral Kingdom near Kahana State Park, police said.
Police said the woman was crossing the highway in a crosswalk at about 9:52 p.m. Saturday when a northbound 2001 Honda driven by a 69-year-old man hit her.
Police said speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash. Investigators closed Kamehameha Highway at about 11 p.m. while they investigated.
