Police: toddler hit while mother checks Facebook
AURORA, Colo. » Police say a Denver-area woman whose daughter died after being hit by a van was checking her messages on Facebook while the toddler was outside.
Authorities say 30-year-old Karen Pena of Aurora faces charges of child abuse and child abuse resulting in death. Pena was being held on a $50,000 bond Friday.
Denver’s KMGH-TV reports the arrest affidavit says Pena told police that she was looking at her Facebook account May 27 when her 22-month-old daughter, Laniece Fletcher, was playing outside with other children.
Police say the girl was run over by a van that dropped someone off at the apartment complex. The driver says she yelled for help when she realized the girl had been hit.
The Arapahoe County coroner’s office says the girl’s skull was crushed.
