A man was in critical condition after a powered parachute crash at Kaiaka Bay Beach Park in Haleiwa.

Police said the call came in about 4:20 p.m. Saturday.

The man, who is about 60 years old, was paragliding — using a parachute with a powered backpack, when the pack malfunctioned and he fell about 100 feet to the ground, an Emergency Medical Services supervisor said.

He had abrasions to the left side of his body, including his shoulder, chest, abdomen, and back, and was unresponsive when paramedics arrived, according to initial dispatch reports.
