Sex offender gets 20-year prison term

A convicted sex offender whom federal prosecutors labeled a sexual predator is headed to state prison.

A state judge sentenced Jay Abregana on Wednesday to the mandatory 20-year prison term for first-degree sexual assault. Abregana, 40, pleaded guilty in March to charges that he had sex with a 12-year-old boy on multiple occasions.

Abregana spent more than 5 years in federal custody for what was supposed to be a 44-month prison sentence for transporting child pornography because he kept violating terms of his post-release probation by continuing to seek out and have sex with minors.

He spent an additional 11 months in federal custody while prosecutors petitioned to have him civilly committed indefinitely as a sexually dangerous person.

A federal judge rejected the government’s request and in August 2008 ordered Abregana released.

The incidents with the 12-year-old boy happened in October and November last year.
