Magnitude-6.8 earthquake hits South Pacific

 

A magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck in the South Pacific Tuesday off the French territory of New Caledonia.

No injuries or damage were immediately reported. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a widespread tsunami based on historical earthquake and tsunami data.

The U.S. Geological Service and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre said the quake hit at 7:55 p.m. Tuesday (10:55 p.m. Monday in Hawaii), about 9 miles beneath the ocean. The epicenter was about 91 miles off New Caledonia’s Loyalty Islands chain, and more than 1,700 miles from Brisbane, Australia.
