NAMES ‘N’ PLACES: Takamiyama, the first foreign-born sumotori (aka Jesse Kuhaulua from Happy Valley, Maui), dropped in on Manoa DNA, the island group featuring dad Lloyd Kawakami and sons Nick and Alex, when the trio performed in Odaiba, outside of Tokyo, in a post earthquake-tsunami relief tour. Dad gave Takamiyama a custom-made Iolani aloha shirt (he’s the honcho of the sportswear label) and said, "He’s such a great guy and well respected there." Lloyd and Nick visited evacuation centers in Sendai and Miyagi prefectures, passing out bottled water, Spam musubi and island cookies and candies. "I was so moved and inspired by the dignity and strength of the people," said Lloyd, listening to the tales of hardship and sharing the tears. …

WHEE, THE PEOPLE: Pete Licata, coffee quality manager and barista trainer at Honolulu Coffee Co., has been named No. 1 barista at the United States Barista Competition in Houston. He’ll move on to the World Barista Championship in Bogota, Colombia, June 2-5, competing with other skilled baristas in espresso drink preparation and service. Since Hawaii is the only coffee-growing state, his "Fruit to Cup" presentation — covering the harvesting, processing and roasting of beans from Rusty’s Hawaiian (Kau) and Wai’ono Meadows (North Kona) — gave him an advantage. …

The June/July issue of Men’s Health names 25 fittest fellas and includes two with island ties: Alex O’Loughlin, known for his six-pack and tattoos, who plays Steve McGarrett on "Hawaii Five-0," and Jason Momoa, ex-Honolulu model and actor, who will star in the remake of "Conan," as in Barbarian. …
