Speed, wet roads blamed in fatal Pali Highway crash

A 31-year-old Honolulu man was speeding on a wet highway on-ramp when he lost control of his pickup truck and crashed last night, police said.

The medical examiner’s office identified the driver as Michael K. Nakada.

Paramedics took Nakada to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition where he died early this morning.

Police said the crash happened on the Pali Highway on-ramp 300 feet north off the Waianae-bound H-1 Freeway at 11:57 p.m.

The driver lost control of his 2003 red Tacoma pickup truck, which hit a curb, went airborne and flew into a rock retaining wall, traffic investigators said.

Police closed the Pali Highway on-ramp and Punchbowl Street between the freeway and Vineyard Boulevard while they investigated the crash.

No other vehicles were involved. Police said the man was wearing a seat belt. It is not known yet if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The traffic fatality is the 24th this year, compared with 19 at the same time last year on Oahu.
