Five people were appointed today to the University of Hawaii Board of Regents by Gov. Neil Abercrombie. 

The appointments — which are subject to confirmation by the state Senate — are:

>> Coralie Matayoshi, an attorney who has served as chief executive officer of the American Red Cross Hawaii State Chapter since 2003. 

>> Jan Sullivan is the chief operating officer of Oceanit, an engineering, science and technology company. She previously served as director of the city Department of Land Utilization as well as the Department of Planning and Permitting. 

>> Patrick Naughton runs a small nonprofit organization that provides tutoring for children and help with dyslexia and other reading disabilities. Naughton has worked as an academic administrator in the UH system for more than 20 years and is former chancellor of the Hawaii Community College in Hilo. 

>> Sandra Scarr is a commonwealth professor of psychology emerita of the University of Virginia. She was a psychology professor at Yale University and obtained a Ph.D. in psychology and social relations from Harvard University. In 1985, she won the National Book Award of the American Psychological Association for “Mother Care/Other Care.” Scarr retired to Hawaii in 1997. 

>> Saedene Ota is the owner and creative director of Sae Design in Maui. In 2005, she was awarded U.S. Small Business Advocate of the Year “Women in Business Champion.” She has won numerous awards for her advertising business. Ota also owns Maui Thing, a retail clothing store in Wailuku.
