Floating house among Hawaii damage from tsunami
HILO>> Damage reports in Hawaii from a tsunami caused by the Japanese earthquake included an unusual sighting — a floating house.
Quince Mento with the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency says firefighters spotted the damage Friday in Kealakekua Bay.
He says besides the floating house, seven others nearby suffered extensive damage from at least one large wave, as did buildings 11 miles north in Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Mento says the bay is not very populated and he didn’t know the exact size of the single-family structure — nor if it was still floating in the bay or had gone to sea.
He says there have been no reports of injuries or missing people, which means everyone likely evacuated as they were advised.
