Waimanalo Gulch landfill to accept residential bulky trash
The Waimanalo Gulch Landfill will begin accepting residential bulky waste on Sundays now that significant repairs have been made to a damaged liner system in one of the dump’s waste cells.
The city said in a news release today that Waimanalo Gulch will accept the trash beginning March 6. The landfill had already been reopened for commercial loads.
The Leeward Oahu landfill has been at least partially closed since mid-January when its water diversion systems failed to handle heavy rain runoff. The landfill released storm water and medical and other waste into the ocean during the storm.
The liner system in one of its waste cells was damaged during the heavy rains.
The city says more repairs are expected.
