HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu is observing the 40th birthday of its public bus system.

TheBus was born on March 1, 1971 when Frank Fasi was mayor of the city.

These days the city’s yellow, orange and rainbow-striped buses provide more than 75 million rides to residents and visitors each year.

City Transportation Director Wayne Yoshioka said in a statement Tuesday TheBus has developed into a venerable and reliable transportation necessity for Oahu.

Honolulu plans to add rail to its transit options. The city last month broke ground on a new $5.5 billion rail line that will go from Kapolei to Ala Moana.
