Movie fan Ann Kiyabu makes a point of watching the top Academy Award nominees each year before the winners are announced on Oscar night in Hollywood.

"Every year I try to make sure I see all the main movies. It’s my little hobby," she said. "The morning they made the (nominees’) announcement, I went right to Netflix and ordered as many of them as I could."

Yesterday her little hobby paid dividends as Kiyabu won the Star-Advertiser’s Oscarama contest and a $200 prize.

The Waikele resident, who works as an instructor in the dental assisting program at Kapiolani Community College, was one of 29 entrants who correctly picked the top six categories — picture, director, actor, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress — and the cinematography tiebreaker. Her ballot was selected in a random drawing of those finalists.

There were 776 entries.

Kiyabu, 53, said her personal pick for best movie was "The Fighter," which brought supporting-actor Oscars to Melissa Leo and Christian Bale.

"I liked ‘The King’s Speech’ a lot, but I think out of everything I went to see, the overall most intense movie was ‘The Fighter.’ It’s not for everybody, and there was a lot of swearing in it but if you can get past that, the story is outstanding," she said.
