OK, keiki, ride that train!

Climb aboard the Cubby Caboose Mini Express, a new train that runs year-round at Windward Mall. The train was designed for children and runs by the Sears wing, on the lower level near the food court. A ride on the caboose costs $3.

A grand opening celebration will be held tomorrow from 10 a.m. to noon. Among the festivities are face painting, balloon creations by Chris Da Clown and free train rides during the grand opening party.

Robotics tourney hits Pearlridge

Eighteen middle and high school teams are vying for an opportunity to compete in the 2011 VEX Robotics World Championship in Florida. Three teams will qualify at a tournament held tomorrow at Pearlridge Center. Tournament matches begin at 9:45 a.m. with final double-elimination matches at 1:30 p.m. at Uptown Center Court.

The Radford High School robotics team will also host a BrushBot workshop table where families can create their own toothbrush robots. For more information, call 488-0981.

Lantern Festival in Chinatown

Lantern-making, storytelling, a lion dance and a mini parade are the highlights of the Lantern Festival in Chinatown tomorrow.

The Friends of Chinatown invite families to take part in the festival from 9 a.m. to noon at Kekaulike Mall.

The traditional lantern festival typically falls on the last day of the Chinese New Year, which is the 15th day of the first month of the Lunar Year.

Its origin is based on a 2,000-year-old legend in which townspeople lit lanterns to appease the Jade Emperor in heaven after killing his favorite goose. The emperor was going to set the village on fire, but upon seeing all the lights, thought it already was ablaze.
