Summit at UH addresses indigenous rights
The University of Hawaii at Manoa will host the 2011 Indigenous Rights Symposium later this week. Magne Ove Varsi, a leader of the Sami indigenous peoples of Northern Europe, is due to speak Friday and Saturday on panels addressing self-determination, sustainability and land and natural resources. He’s expected to be joined by UH professor Jonathan Osorio and Office of Hawaiian Affairs chief advocate Esther Kiaaina. The Sami live in northern Scandinavia and the Kola Peninsula of Russia.
