Honolulu firefighters are battling a fire at the Aloha Lani condominium building at 2211 Ala Wai Boulevard.

An eighth-floor unit of a Waikiki high-rise condominium appears to be destroyed after a three-alarm fire.

At about 10:50 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of a fire at 2211 Ala Wai Blvd. The blaze lapped up to the ninth floor lanai, but did not damage any other units inside the Aloha Lani condominium.

About 60 firefighters across 11 companies responded to the scene. The fire was under control by 11:25 a.m., and extinguished 20 minutes later.

Fire spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said dozens of personnel were needed because the fire was in a high-rise building.

Firefighters have to secure the building, take control of the elevator and connect to stand-up pipes.

"It takes time to put in these resources," Seelig said. "It’s not like a house fire on the ground."

The cause and extent of damage has yet to be determined. The building was constructed before 1974.

Seelig said there are no reports of injuries.

An employee at Aloha Lani said the 34-story condominium was being evacuated.
