Mountain West sits tight with 10 schools
The Mountain West Conference will head toward 2012 with 10 members for the time being, it was announced today.
"The Board feels strongly the membership configuration already established going forward creates outstanding prospects for future success," the MWC directors said in a statement from Las Vegas, scene of its annual January meeting.
In December the MWC announced the addition of Hawaii for 2012 along with previously announced Fresno State and Nevada of the Western Athletic Conference. Boise State will join in 2011.
There had been speculation the MWC might vote to go to 12 members for 2012 with the league casting an eye on Texas schools while San Jose State and Utah State of the WAC had been seeking consideration.
"Over the past two days, the Board of Directors has engaged in a very thorough discussion of several key topics pertinent to the future of the Mountain West Conference," the MWC said in a statement. "This has included, but not been limited to, issues related to television, the Bowl Championship Series and membership."
