Big Island police reclassify girl’s death as a murder case
Big Island police have reclassified the death of a 19-month-old Hilo girl as second-degree murder.
Police said the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office found the cause of death as intercranial injury due to repetitive head trauma, according to preliminary pathological reports.
The toddler, Pomaikai K. Ferreira, died Sunday night at the Queen’s Medical Center, where she had been taken Jan. 2 in critical condition from the Hilo Medical Center.
Police have not made any arrests for the murder, but had arrested and released a 36-year-old Hilo man for first-degree assault.
