Light winds predicted on New Year’s Eve
The tradewinds are back today, but a new weather system approaching the islands from the northwest will bring a change in winds tomorrow and a slight chance of thundershowers on New Year’s Day.
The National Weather Service says light winds may not dissipate all of the smoke from New Year’s Eve fireworks tomorrow night.
"When you have light, variable winds, a lot of it will depend on the direction and how strong they are," said forecaster Bob Burke. "Land breezes off the land will help to blow it out. But it’s not going to be that strong."
This week’s rains means the ground will still be damp, which could reduce the threat of fireworks fires. The light winds may help firefighters on duty tomorrow night, Burke said.
Forecasters are also predicting isolated, scattered showers tomorrow night.
The light and variable winds will continue into New Year’s Day. But a weather system expected to reach the islands Saturday night will bring unstable air over the islands and the slight possibility of thundershowers through Sunday, forecasters said.
The beginning of the work week, however, should bring tradewind weather back to the islands through the middle or end of next week.
