Small quake rattles Maui, East Oahu

An earthquake struck off the coast of Maui yesterday morning but was too small to cause any damage.

The 3.8-magnitude temblor occurred at 10:11 a.m., about 40 miles south-southwest of Wailuku, at a depth of about 6.2 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was about 95 miles southeast of Honolulu.

People reported feeling the quake around Maui, to a lesser degree on east Oahu, and as far as Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, the agency said.

On Nov. 24, three earthquakes hit around the Alenuihaha Channel between Maui and the Big Island, near the location of yesterday’s quake.

That evening, a 3.3-magnitude temblor hit within 20 minutes of a 4.7-magnitude quake. A third quake, of 2.8 magnitude, followed four hours later.
