Hacker fails in attempt to cancel Pearl City High classes

This screen shot of the Pearl City High School website shows the message computer hackers left in an apparent attempt to cancel classes today. The Department of Education, however, says the school is open today and students and faculty should come to the campus.

A computer hack of the Pearl City High School website had no impact on classes today, school officials said.

A hacker or hackers posted a false notice on the school’s website last night that classes would be canceled today because of a water main break.

Pearl City High School Vice Principal Joe Halfmann said once the hack was discovered, school officials activated their phone tree and notified media outlets that school would go on as scheduled.

"We did our best to communicate with faculty and staff to correct the erroneous information," Halfmann said this morning. "For the most part school seems to be going on just fine and most people seem to have gotten the message."

Halfmann said the website returned to normal just before school began today at 8 a.m.

Halfmann said the officials will be investigating the incident and are looking at options to prevent it from happening again.

He said passwords to the website are being changed and the school is looking at other security measures.
