Furlough days and holidays close some state, county services

The following furlough days and holidays will affect certain state or county services in December:

» Tomorrow: Hawaii County; the state Judiciary and some divisions of the state Attorney General’s Office. Remaining open will be the Child Support Enforcement Agency, Criminal Justice Data Center and the Crime Prevention Justice Assistance Division.

On the Big Island, public safety employees such as police, dispatchers, fire and Civil Defense are exempt from furlough days. All police district records offices, except the South Hilo Records Division, will be closed.

Public Works and other United Public Workers union employees will work a normal schedule with their two nonpaid furlough days replacing normally paid sick days or vacation days during the month.

Hele-On bus service will operate normally, but Mass Transit Agency offices will be closed. The Mooheau Bus Terminal, operated by the Downtown Improvement Association, will be open.

County swimming pools may schedule furlough days at other times; schedules will be posted at each pool. The Hilo Municipal Golf Course and Panaewa Complex including the Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo will be open.

Waste management including transfer stations will be open.

Scheduled recreational classes at county parks and the Hoolulu Complex in Hilo will be open as usual.

» Dec. 10: state; City and County of Honolulu; Kauai County; and Maui County except for the Department of Liquor Control, which takes a furlough Dec. 13.

» Dec. 17: state except for the Judiciary and the main office of the attorney general; City and County of Honolulu; Kauai County; and Hawaii County. Closed will be Child Support Enforcement Agency, Criminal Justice Data Center and the Crime Prevention Justice Assistance Division.

» Friday, Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve) and Friday, Dec. 31 (New Year’s Eve) are holidays for the state and all counties.
